Raging Rudolph
Raging Rudolph was part of a series of short films animator Corky Quackenbush made for MAD TV in the late 90’s. While I’m usually a little skeptical of the Spike & Mike aesthetic of twisted animation, these stylistic re-appropriations of the Rankin & Bass TV specials really tickle my funny bone. The homey familiarity of the R & B classic stop-motion look are the peak of family-friendly innocousness, and the last place you’d expect to see Scorsesian head-vice jokes (which is impressive, considering this aired within 2 weeks of Casino’s premiere). Hey, I’m easy.
Among the many bizzaro Christmas items I ordered for the store this past couple of weeks, was a copy of Quackenbush’s Merry Freakin’ Christmas DVD for CineFile, but, alas, not in time for the holiday season. Still for fans of his work, it should be available to rent in the next week or two. Maybe Corky can give us a DVD of some of his early rarer stuff, if I prod him a little…I’ll let you all know.
